A Quick Scented Candles Primer

Scented candles are incredibly popular and make wonderful hostess gifts, holiday presents and home accents that just about everyone loves. The reason is obvious – they appeal to our love of both visual beauty and wonderful scents. A good scented candle can last for hours and provide us with both the rich, visual warmth of a flickering flame and a wonderful aroma that’s sure to spark pleasant emotions.

In fact, scent is more closely tied to memory than any of our other senses. Choosing the right kind of scented candles for your home can lend a festive, holiday feeling to a room, turn your bedroom into a soothing sanctuary, and stimulate your senses in the morning so you start your day refreshed and alert.

Most scented candles fall into one of four categories: Florals, Baked Goods or Kitchen Scents, Outdoors, and Plants or Fruits/Nuts. There are also some scented candles that fall into a special category that’s sometimes referred to as the Occasions category.

Floral scented candles are the most popular. These include traditional scents like roses, mixed bouquets and some of the newer, fresher scents like water lilies and freesia. These wonderful scents are romantic and natural, evoking the scent of a full, rich armful of flowers straight from the garden. Some scents will be richer and more powerful than others. If you like a good, old-fashioned scent, kitchen scented candles are a great choice. These are inviting fragrances you can light in your family room, kitchen or dining room any time of the day.

Outdoor scented candles run the gamut from soothing to stimulating. These may capture the scent of bracing ocean air or the more exotic fragrances of a Far East marketplace. These aren’t usually pure, single note fragrances. Most of them will feature several different types of plant fragrances as well as other more elusive notes like the scent of fresh air or the salty tang of sea water. Outdoor scented candles with watery notes are usually invigorating and fresh. You may also find outdoor candles that make you think of the cool, shadowy allure of forests. These will include scents like balsam, fir and pine.

Scented candles focusing on fruits or nuts are usually invigorating. Citrus scents are especially a wonderful way to stimulate the senses and give you a quick pick-me-up. Grapefruit, lemon, and orange are zesty, eye-opening scents that are equally at home in any room of your house. Look for scents like watermelon, cantaloupe and blueberry if you love scented candles that remind you of warm summer days.

Today’s scented candles also offer many sophisticated blends that capture an elusive combination of scents that create a mood. For instance, you may find holiday candles that capture a mysterious mixture of spruce tree, sugar cookies, freshly fallen snow and the eucalyptus and poinsettias in a live wreath. Perfume- the Aromatic Fragrance

Perfume is known for its aromatic fragrance. It is mixture of essential oils and aromatic compounds that gives a pleasing smell. Perfume is generally related with sensual and passionate aspects of one’s life. The exact chemical formula is never distributed publicly.

Some perfume ingredients are animal products and some of them are castor comes from beavers, musk from male deer and ambergris from the sperm whale. Animal substances are often used as fixatives that enable perfume to evaporate slowly and emit odors longer. Other fixatives include coal tar, mosses, resins, or synthetic chemicals. Alcohol and sometimes water are used to dilute ingredients in perfumes.

Many a time man and women find it difficult to get the perfect perfume is a stressful, time-consuming experience. If you familiarize yourself with the six basic fragrance groups, you will not only save time, but also make your shopping experience more enjoyable.

Make a perfume

To make your perfume you mix at least 25 drops total of essential oils divided evenly between base, middle and top notes. Add a few drops of the bridge oil. Add 2 1/2 ounces of alcohol, shake for a few minutes, and then let it sit for 48 hours. Add 2 tablespoons spring water, stir, then pour through a coffee filter and put it in a bottle.

Fragrance Oils may be used in place of the essential oils for a cheaper version. Cover your work area with a plastic sheet. Essential oils and Fragrance Oils may damage surfaces .A good fragrance formula should consist of 75% dilatants such as vodka, and 25% fragrances. Glycerin is a good fixative, which can be added to formulas to help it retain its scents.

Plants have long been used in perfumery as a source of essential oils and aroma compounds. These aromatics are usually secondary metabolites produced by plants as protection against herbivores, infections, as well as to attract pollinators. Plants are by far the largest source of fragrant compounds used in perfumery. The sources of these compounds may be derived from various parts of a plant. A plant can offer more than one source of aromatics, for instance the aerial portions and seeds of coriander have remarkably different odors from each other. Orange leaves, blossoms, and fruit zest are the respective sources of petit grain, neroli, and orange oils.

10 Essential Oils To Avoid Using On Skin

Fragrance is a standard ingredient in most skin care and, with the ever growing popularity of natural, organic products, it is likely that natural fragrance from pure essential (aromatherapy) oils is the fragrance of choice. Most natural product producers avoid synthetic fragrances, however even though they are natural, one must be careful about which aromatherapy oils are going to be applied to the skin.

Aromatherapy oils, especially organic, can be very beneficial in terms of their positive action on the skin and their ability to promote a sense of psychological well-being.  However most aromatherapy oils can be irritating, even chamomile or lavender, especially to sensitive skin types. That being said, we should not expect that every Essential Oil is going to be a skin irritant just because it is an Essential Oil - but we should have a healthy awareness.

Even in today's natural product market we need to be aware that there are many 'natural' products containing highly irritating essential oils and the potential for such irritation is hardly likely to be advertised, particularly if the irritation is not physically apparent.  Peppermint is an example of this.  This aromatherapy oil actually triggers an immune system response in the form of a deep inflammation reaction.  Even though it feels like peppermint is soothing, it is not.  One obvious side effect of peppermint in lip balms is that the user feels they need to continually re-apply in order to get relief from the 'dryness'.  It is a dependency cycle of which most consumers of peppermint flavored lip balms are not aware.  Another example is with an aromatherapy oil that smells so wonderful, the very thought that it could be irritating is hard to believe.  Yet one such oil comes to mind - Peru Balsam.  With its alluring vanilla-like aroma, it is in fact a known strong skin irritant and should be avoided, especially for those with sensitive skin.

How does one know which essential oils are okay and which should never be applied to the body? Surely one shouldn't have to be an actual aromatherapist to enjoy the wonderful benefits of aromatherapy! Thankfully, in the majority of cases, appropriate aromatherapy oils are used in the right quantity so that the aromatic benefits far outweigh the risk of irritation. 

For those who are very unfamiliar about aromatherapy however, the following is a list of some of the most irritating aromatherapy oils for the skin.  (The list is by no means complete.  There are literally thousands of aromatherapy oils and many that are potential irritants):

- Cinnamon,
- Citronella,
- Clove,
- Eucalyptus,
- Ginger,
- Lemon Balm (Balm Mint),
- Tolu Balsam (Peru Balsam),
- Peppermint,
- Pine,
- Thyme.

The irritation risk from just these few essential oils is extremely high, so they shouldn't be applied to the skin.

Something else to watch out for is if a natural product carton fails to list the actual aromatherapy oils included in the product (often times they have 'fragrance' and 'essential oils' but do not list the actual oils used in the fragrance component).  If you don't know which aromatherapy oils are in the product, how are you going to know if you are exposing your skin to irritants?

If, after trial and error, you do find that aromatherapy oils are irritating, resist the temptation to use them and opt for unscented products.  You can still enjoy aromatherapy oils in vapor steamers or for scenting your home!
